Macworld Expo San Francisco 2004: User Group Lounge
Macworld Expo and The Apple User Group Advisory Board present the User Group Lounge (UGL), the place to get up close and personal with the people who make the Macintosh community exciting and dynamic. A diverse roster of well-known columnists, authors, magazine publishers, community leaders and Macintosh personalities meet with Mac enthusiasts in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. This is your chance to get to know the decision makers on a first-name basis. While there, locate your local Macintosh user group and find out why you should be involved.
The UGL will be located in Room 250/262, West Mezzanine in the South Hall, one level above the show floor. The Lounge will be open during show floor hours, and will feature a wide variety of events and speakers. Please check the schedule below on a regular basis.

With more than 15,000 members in the United States and 51 other countries, the AppleWorks Users Group (AWUG) is the world's largest computer user organization. AWUG publishes the AppleWorks Journal and provides other support services for AppleWorks.
Warren Williams, the President of the AppleWorks Users Group, is a Professor Emeritus of Educational Technology at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Williams has written more than 500 articles published in psychological journals and technology magazines and newsletters.
Cathleen Merritt, the Director of the AppleWorks Users Group, holds Masters degrees in Education and Educational Technology. Ms. Merritt, who manages AWUG's daily operations, has published more than 350 articles in educational technology magazines and newsletters.

This session will provide a forum to outline the basics of campus MUGs the who/why/where/when and how. Although campus groups are becoming much more popular, the need to attract a younger membership pool in local community MUGs is important. This session will also outline some tips about how to attract a younger crowd to User Groups, and how to keep them involved and active. David Pogue, Yale '85, became the personal-technology columnist for the New York Times in November 2000, after having written ten years' worth of the triple award-winning Desktop Critic column for Macworld magazine.
With over 2.5 million books in print, Pogue is one of the world's bestselling how-to authors, having written or co-written six books in the "for Dummies" series (Macs, iMacs, iBooks, Magic, Opera, and Classical Music), along with the Computer Press Association award-winning "PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide," several computer-humor books, and a technothriller, "Hard Drive" (a New York Times "notable book of the year").
In 2000, Pogue joined forces with O'Reilly & Associates to launch the Missing Manual series, whose subjects so far include Dreamweaver 4, Mac OS 9, iMovie, AppleWorks 6, Windows Me, Windows 2000,Office 2001, and iMovie 2. He and his wife Jennifer Pogue, MD, live in Connecticut with their young son and daughter.

Dennis Sellers

Dennis Sellers is currently an editor for MacMinute following an eight-year stint at MacCentral. Prior to his online affiliations, he was a newspaper editor/reporter (seven years) and teacher (seven years). During his varied communications career, he's had over 3,000 magazine and newspaper articles published. I've written about comics (for Comic Book Heroes), fitness (Muscular Development), photography (Rangefinder, Digital Camera Magazine), education (for Journal Communications in Brentwood, TN), and a wide range of other subjects.
For two years he wrote character development material for children in grades K-4 as part of the Project Solution collaboration between The Tennessean newspaper and the Nashville school system. Derrick Story is the managing editor for O'Reilly Network and the Mac DevCenter, which he created in Dec. 2000 for O'Reilly & Associates. His focus is Mac OS X, digital media, and mobile computing.
Derrick's professional experience includes more than 20 years as a photojournalist, former managing editor of Web Review, and a speaker for O'Reilly, CMP, and IDG conferences. His "Mastering Digital Photography" tutorial will be a part of this year's Macworld SF conference. Derrick authored the Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 2nd Edition and the Digit al Video Pocket Guide (O'Reilly), and coauthored iPhoto 2: the Missing Manual (O'Reilly/Pogue Press).
