EmiratesMac To Be First Mac User Group in United Arab Emirates
Mac User Groups are a worldwide community. Too often we focus on the significant anniversaries of long-standing gorups and forget about the excitement and challenges associated with forming a new MUG.
That's why we want to help get the word out about a new group, EmiratesMac, that has opened up shop in the United Arab Emirates.
Magnus Nystedt, one of the group's founders, talked to The MUG Center about the genesis of the group, and how it grew out of a blog about the lack of access to Mac produces in the UAE.
"The blog quickly started to get some attention, arguably because there was nothing else covering the UAE. A few more people got involved and we realized that this could turn into something bigger so we got the www.emiratesmac.com domain and hosting in March. Since the end of March we've grown to almost 150 registered users and the site is getting more and more traffic and users are getting more involved in the forums," said Magnus.
What about the future? "We thought this could become something really big because there seemed to be a pent-up demand for Apple and Mac information and news and for a community organized around these issues. After talking to a lot of people, individuals and businesses, we kept hearing the same thing again and again, that they would love to get together with others, learn things, and have fun. So the idea to organize a User Group came up."
On their agenda is an event they call "MacNight," demonstrations of products, courses in various software applications and more.
"We hope to be able to tap into this existing user-base and organize it to be able to offer the community better information, news, events, etc."
The group's first meeting will be held on August 8 at theDelma Corner at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi, and their goal is to have at least a monthly meeting, alternating between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
