The MUG Center Survey: Best Event of 2004

Survey Dates: 1/5 - 1/18/05

What was the biggest, best, coolest thing your user group did in 2004?

  • The biggest, best, coolest thing LWMUG did in 2004 was operate and manage a 1,500 square foot Macintosh Learning Center. Our Learning Center has twenty-two Macs, mostly flat-panel iMacs. We enjoy broadband access, a high quality screen projector, and a portable public address system. The Learning Center is open Monday through Friday. We use ten volunteers, called Supervisors, to handle the walk-in Leisure World residents (population 18,000). Our MUG membership is around 400. Our modest membership dues of $10 provides us with sufficient operating funds. Our housing board contributes annually with funds to provide a few new Macs. We do not pay rent. We have a class one afternoon a week on either email, Internet, digital photography, or iMovie. We feel we have a world-class learning facility. Please visit us on the web at www.lwmug.org, another outstanding MUG web site.

  • "The great people that run PhotoshopWorld, MacDesign, NAPP and other training orgs and events gave us free booth space at MacDesign in Chicago. Not only a way to promote our group, The Rest of Us in Chicago, but a great fundraiser as we created a CD of free fonts (and font creation software) from worldwide foundries. All fonts were donated by the foundries, and we ended up with over 600 fonts on the CD (including dozens of Chinese demo fonts from the world's premier Asian foundry in Beijing), as well as a complete PDF showing eBook, active links to foundries and other useful sites. Virtually all fonts donated were fully usable, full versions. We sold for $10 a copy, netting the most extra funding for our group in our history at a single event(between $1000 & $2000). Not only a great way for many indie foundries to be noticed, but an extremely popular item on the Expo floor, bringing us lots of traffic, more than some commercial booths. Although we had to pay for incidental expenses (show furniture, electrical connections, etc.), was well worth the cost and effort with what we brought in. The dozens (hundreds?) of hours contacting and negotiating with font foundries, actual CD design and production, as well as large signage, was donated by various members of our group, keeping expenses way down. Highly recommended for any group that can come up with a useful item to sell for fundraising, and of course, opportunity to participate in such a large event."

  • "Our crazy Summer in January Barbecue Fundraiser during which I barbecued hotdogs outside in 6 degree weather. The participants ate them indoors."

  • "Impoved web site to have it reflect most current acivities, as well as acting as a resource for historical info."

  • "A welcome back snowbird pizza party where we gave prizes of many products of use by the members.--Stuffit, keyless keyboard and mouse, panther, Photoshop elements, and more, including two $100 bills. Our meeting was the largest we ever had. The program for the night was on using the scanner."
  • "Celebreated Twenty Macintosh Years with a presentation on the History of the Apple MAcintosh, through the Advertisements of Apple Computer."

  • "We conducted our first membership drive / fundraiser by raffling off an iPod 20GB. We used an open house to launch this and got 6 new members from that event. A portion of the fundraiser proceeds we raised were going to a local charity. We raised $150.00 for the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life team."

  • "The Australian Mac Users Group contacted every MUG in Australia and corrected all their contact details and passed this on to Apple (some records were over 10 years out of date). We had representatives of 95% of Australian MUG's join our group and we are dedicated to providing resources to all of them. We instigated a program for vendors to supply special offers to all Australian MUG's and are currently co ordinating support for the Tsunami victims amongst Australian MUG's. Our efforts regarding these tasks has been published on Apple Australia's site. We are trying to act as something like an Australian version of the MUGCenter site. All up since we formed 9 months ago we have started 3 Mac User Groups of our own and are trying to organize for a number of local Mac based SIG groups (one has over 2000 members) to become recognised Mac User Groups. We have made other achievements but helping to provide a home to bring all of Australia's MUG's together is our greatest achievement."
