The MUG Center Blog: Travel Tips as a User Group Meeting Topic
Writings, ramblings, proclamations and prognostications from the front lines of the Apple community.
Looking for an interesting meeting topic for your group for the coming months? At Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, I co-presented The Art of Traveling with Your Mac with Lesa Snider of The Graphic Reporter on the show floor stage. This is a terrific topic for your user group because so many of your members are already mobile Mac owners, with even more likely to take the plunge as wireless access spreads, laptops gain capabilities and become even more affordable (just today, Apple announced PowerBook speed bumps and price decreases). This kind of meeting will foster audience participation because everyone has their own favorite products and opinions. Best of all, no one is right in most cases; it is about what works for each user.
Topics covered included hardware, software, services and travel tips that are tailored to mobile users of various flavors. I made my picks, Lesa made hers, and we discussed why they sometimes overlapped but often differed due to contrasts in our traveling style and priorities.
The session wasn't just limited to Mac-specific aspects of travel, and your meeting shouldn't be either. Any good information is worth sharing, so you'll find hints on use of credit cards for purchasing online access and a great calling card resource to help keep phone costs down while simplifying your expense account
You can download the PDF of the entire session and view my selections and tips here on The MUG Center. Feel free to use them as the basis for an upcoming meeting at your user group. From time to time I'll be updating them in the TMC Blog, as new ideas, products and techniques are added.
